Standing at an elevation of 1,800 metres above sea level, the Nuwara Eliyas town’s origins are traced back to British Civil Servants in the 1840s, who sought refuge against the lowlands’ scorching heat.
Lovingly dubbed “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya evolved into the base of operations for the islands coffee and then tea plantation industries. The city still boasts a touch of the old country, colonial-era buildings, cobblestone pathways, colourful flower gardens, the annual horse races and sprawling tea plantations gives Nuwara Eliya a rather unique identity compared to other major cities in Sri Lanka.
A honeymoon in Nuwara Eliya could include lush tea plantation walks, tea factory visits, browsing colonial architecture, golfing, boating, hiking cascading waterfalls and strolling through acres of forest reserves. The city and its surroundings deserve a visit but do make sure you keep a day or two for your trip as the city is roughly five hours away from Colombo.
