Romantic Beaches in Mirissa

Discover Mirissa's crown jewel-Secret Beach! Tucked away from the usual crowds, this secluded shore offers a day of tranquillity and stunning beauty. Niyunwella Beach is also located along the same main path as Secret Beach, with a turnoff leading through a picturesque, forested trail down to the beach. (A handwritten signpost will direct you to the pathway)

Reaching these hidden gems is a bit of an adventure, hence why it’s still a secret! Follow the signs (and perhaps take a deep breath) as you embark on a short hike from Harbour Road in front of the Cargills on Galle Road. A small Buddhist altar on a hilltop marks your progress, and a hidden dirt path offers a steeper but more direct route straight to the beach.

Secret Beach is the most popular of the two beaches. Divided into two sections, it offers sunbathing facilities, including sunbeds, chairs, and lounges. Secret Beach also features an elevated sunset viewing point for photography on a small nearby hill. The residents’ house next to the beach operates the food and drinks bar for this stretch of beach. Secret Beach feels hidden by the natural shade the surrounding greenery provides.

While Secret Beach remains the most well-known and popular, we preferred Niyunwella Beach, which we found almost deserted. In our opinion, Niyunwella is the ‘real’ secret beach of the two!

Swimming is safe and a delight here, with clear waters offering refreshing dips and the reef providing protection. To truly unlock the underwater wonders, consider renting a snorkel and exploring the vibrant marine life. The crystal-clear water ensures you won't miss a thing!

As the tide recedes in Mirissa, a hidden gem emerges - Turtle Bay. Beyond the iconic Parrot Rock, the coastline expands, revealing two beautiful, secluded beaches. Soft white sand and natural shade create a sanctuary for relaxation while the calm, turquoise waters invite you in.

A vibrant coral reef lives just offshore, transforming the water into a mesmerising palette of blue hues. Gazing towards the left, your eyes will meet the picturesque Coconut Tree Hill, a must-visit for any Instagrammer. To the right, the majestic Parrot Rock stands guard, marking the boundary of Turtle Bay.

But Turtle Bay isn't just about stunning scenery; it's a haven for marine life. Encountering magnificent sea turtles is practically guaranteed, especially with some snorkelling. Imagine the thrill of watching these gentle giants glide effortlessly through the crystal-clear water, feeding on seagrass meadows.

While exploring Turtle Bay, be prepared for a change of pace. Unlike the bustling main beach, this area offers a tranquil escape, perfect for those seeking serenity. However, if you venture towards Coconut Tree Hill, expect a different scene. This iconic vantage point has become a popular photo spot, and you might encounter a queue for that perfect picture, especially around sunset.
