A charming beach city, Galle was an important ancient port of call for sailors and a prized possession of the colonial powers seeking a foothold on the country as well as safeguarding their trade routes. The first power to take Galle, the Portuguese built a fort in Galle in 1588, which was later expanded and further fortified into an important military and civilian centre by the Dutch in 1649. The present splendour of the Galle Fort is largely due to the expansion work of the Dutch who lost the country and the fort to the British in 1796. The 400 years of occupation and fortification of Galle and mainly the Galle Fort is evident in its buildings, streets and ramparts, making it an important historic city and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The best-preserved fort in the country, the Galle Fort is also known as the best-preserved Dutch Fort in all of Asia.
